I havent used Cubase for a while, but the fact you're using the Vst version interests me... are you using it as a plugin, or am I thinking of another program that go 'vsti' mode? Just cause it might be part of your problem. If you bought Cubase, you should have lots of cool samples to make your trancey beats with. If you downloaded it, there's a good chance it wont come with diddly squat, so you might have to go http://www.loops.net and find some beats of your own.

ive used cubase for a wide range of applications, but i have to say that making drum beats isnt that easy with it. i think cubase is best used as a multitracking device. if you have a midi controller on which to make your drum beat, then it makes cubase more useful for making drum patterns, but on the whole, fruity loops is probably the best for this. you can output your fruity loops audio into cubase and multitrack sequence from there.

If you mean that you can't put 2 samples closed to each other, you need another program to edit your sample (stick samples together so that they can start when you want) try looking for waveflow.
