I know this could get into a big discussion, but sometimes, things get posted here, that aren't jazz, like Norah Jones. What do you guys think is jazz...I know it's a very hard question, but I like those kind of discussions :tongue:

Well at one time, the definition would be that it's based on the blues and it swings and includes improvisation.

Ken Burns and Wynton Marsalis would have you believe that is the only definition. And that all the avant and free jazz is not jazz. This is why they shortchanged the last 40 years of the history of Jazz in that horrendous documentary, Jazz.

Of course, Wynton as the "savior" of Jazz got a lot of attention in the last part of the documentary.

This is also why Wynton and his bands/orchestra play as if they are still in the 40’s. It’s a lifeless imitation but still an imitation.

I think most of her fans think she and her music is Jazz. That's because most of them have never heard any real jazz or jazz singers.

yeah you're right, you know, I think, it juts irrtates me a lot, when people reffer to this kind of music as jazz.

Now what drives me crazy is when they say Kenny G. is jazz.
