She went to a performing arts school in Texas and studied jazz for four years! And that was high school. She might be borderline jazz-pop but she is still definately jazz.

I love seeing Norah's fans lash out about how she is supposed to be jazz. It's not as funny as Kenny G. fans but it's still funny. So, there are different genres of Jazz? Really? Thanks for informing us.

Anyone that didn't know this please raise your hand?
Want to bet that I and a few others can can name a lot more of the genres and sub genres than you can? As well as a lot more musicians and recordings in each of them.
And I can place people into any of the genres of Jazz from 30+ years of experience. I can care less about being popular or unpopular. Being popular has no bearing on what genre an artist or their music happens to be. And Norah is not jazz.
And actually, I am glad Norah is popular. That means Blue Note has more money to reissue real jazz recordings and occasional new recording from Osby or Lovano. And also a few people might eventually start to listen to the real thing. More power to Norah but she is not jazz!
And where she went to school has no bearing on her music. Several jazz musicians went to classical schools for their studies but they didn't end up playing classical music. You can hear elements of classical in Cecil Taylor's music but he is most definitely a jazz musician. Just because someone may have a few elements of jazz doesn’t make them jazz musicians. There are rock groups that have elements of jazz but that does not make them jazz groups either. The Doors for one have elements of jazz but hardly jazz.
There is absolutely no improvisation of any kind in Norah’s music!
So, if you want to find the person that apparently doesn't know what he is talking about I would suggest looking in the mirror.
