I might go with Curtis Mayfield. I think you could explore a lot of different things in such a movie. You could look at his actual life as well as the times in which he lived -- for example, the background of Superfly culturally and cinematically would be pretty interesting IMHO.

Plus, the man is a legend and the tragic end of his life should not be forgotten.
