Industrial Music

I'm new to this here forum, and have noticed the threads about Skinny Puppy and Neubauten. Are there any fans of the early industrialists on this forum? It's probably my favourite genre of music, and the late 70s, early 80s has to be the most creative time in popular music, in my opinion.

Anyway, does anyone like the following artists:

Throbbing Gristle
Nurse with Wound
Portion Control
SPK
Current 93
Legendary Pink Dots
Swans
Laibach
Coil
Test Dept.

In fact if you like/dislike any bands or albums from this genre/era, I'd like to hear your opinons.

Well, I don't see how Current 93, Coil, and Legendary Pink Dots made a list of industrial bands... C93 always seemed more of a dark folk band too me. The Coil I always thought to be more ambient than anything. And the Pink Dots, I've just never heard a track even remotely resembling industrial. They are awesome though. Just don't see how they fit the industrial bill.

Not even to sure this thread belongs here. Its all good though, I have no idea where I'd put it either.... maybe the electronic section.

Well, I see your point about LPD, but they all sprang from the same record labels at around the same time. Current 93 and Coil have evolved a lot over the years, but their members came from Psychic TV and Throbbing Gristle, and they did used to create a fairly hellish noise. I suppose they might be post-industrial, but what's a genre or two between friends.

Don't see why this thread shouldn't be here though, if industrial was anything, it was defintitely experimental. I wouldn't particularly class it as 'electronic', unless you count all non-acoustic music as electronic

I don't see what record labels and former bands have to do with the current bands sound or genre.

I just thought I'd name a short list of bands who came from a certain time and place, but all had a sound of their own, and can all be found under the 'industrial' section of most record shops, lists etc.

I was hoping it might get a bit more discussion to tell you the truth. It's quiet on this experimental/avant-garde board ain't it?

Is minimalism big again?

SPK are probably my favourite of the extreme noise variety of industrial, but you have to watch out, there mid-80s stuff is very dodgy.

As for Portion Control, their 1982 "I Staggered Mentally" LP was one of the most innovative electronic releases of the era, and very heavily influenced Skinny Puppy (ie. they nicked their style). It's incredibly difficult to track down, in fact it's a bit of an obsession of mine to get an original copy, but I do have most of it downloaded now. It's really an agressive techno-punk, lots of cut-ups, beats and bleeps. Their later albums aren't as good, but are still well worth hunting down.

Hello, this is my first posting on the forum, hope it's not too long :O)
Here's some experiences with some of the bands mentioned.

To start w/ the Pink Dots, they are not industrial in my book, more symphonic experimental. Experimental like Coil, Laibach and Test. Dept. , all bands i like (in a way). As the Pink Dots are from Holland i had the opportunity to see them play live a couple of times, as I am dutch. We even booked them ourselves for a gig in our hometown in the north of Holland back in 1990 orso.
I've always liked their magic symfonic fairy music and 'the maria dimension' still is one of my fave space albums of all time along with skinny puppies 'too dark park' (never caught them live, 2004 is my year finally ) and doubting thomas 'the infidel'.
Their stuff with Key as Teargarden is beautiful too but now in 2004 i don't listen to them anymore, just some side projects by members of the dots (ie. twilight dub circus souyndsystem).

I saw Coil recently here in Amsterdam and they couldn't really impress me (maybe it was due to the way too high priced ticket and a lousy 45 minute performance).
The most beautiful stuff from Coil imo is their older experimental and ambient-esque stuff like Horse Rotorvator and Gold Is The Metal. Also their mini album w/ the Hellraiser tune is great!

Test Dept also isn't really industrial i think, don't know how to call it.
I like their militant vs. folkish sound a lot. Unacceptable Face Of Freedom
and Terra Firma are both very nice albums. Caught them live in Amsterdam
once, they would beat the wooden racks untill their hands were bleeding, very intense.

I have some music by the other bands mentioned on the list but it's not really my cup
of industrial anymore. Laibach's new cd is utterly boring imo. And the Swans....
Michael Gira gawd, what a voice.....never got into their albums to be honest.
I do like their side project SKIN w/ Jarboe. I believe they have two albums out.

I do like electronica from the early 80's a lot, old Puppy / FLA / F242 / DAF and the like are still played on a regular basis. There's also so much new to listen to nowadays.
