think distortion... then imagine turning up the amp to 11... (listen to some old sabbath or the intro to 'for whom the bells toll' by metallica for a good example...)
although it might sound like you're losing some of your low end depending on your full set up... i know that if i'm not careful with how i set up my bass i'll end up sounding like a really crunchy guitar with distortion at times...

keep in mind different distortion pedals will give you different sounds (and there are lots of them)... it's probably best to take your bass down to the music store and try any pedal in your price range to find something you like...

. I always thought it was a kind of distortion peddle but wasnt sure. Would be nice to experience different sound from ma bass.
