I really like Mogwai's "Happy Songs for Happy People". Maybe I'm the only one though

What is so experimental about...

Groups like Mogwai? Mogwai sits in my music collection right next to my ambient electronic stuff, but Mogwai's home on these boards seems to be in the experimental section while most of the rest of my collection is in Electronic. Maybe it's just because I have trouble classifying music, but what makes groups like Mogwai more "Avant-Garde/Experimental" than Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Lemon Jelly, Bonobo, and so on... In short, I'm confused

Classifying music isn't that important, but anyway Mogwai can hardly be called electronica, right? Aphex Twin and co are definitely as experimental, maybe even more than Mogwai, but they make their music with computers basicly... I think that's the difference

To your ears, the sonic quality of Mogwai may be reminiscent of ambient electronic music, but for the most part Mogwai is a rock band using traditional rock instrumentation. The "experimental" part of the equation is their sparse use of electronics, minimal arrangements, omission of vocals (for the most part) and grandiose epic songs. Mostly, we're going by the accepted norm of the music press when we call Mogwai "experimental". They are experimental instrumental indie rock or "post-rock" if you want to get to specifics, part of a whole scene of indy bands that follow a similar aesthetic. As always, categorization of bands like this is pretty subjective. I could just as easily see them listed under Prog-Rock if desired.

Question Post Rock With Piano?

could anyone give me some suggestions regarding post rock with piano, kind of like on A Silver Mt Zion's He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corners of Our Rooms? It doesn't really have to be post rock alone, any mournful modern sounding piano stuff is good...
