Greatest Canterbury Band

I know that quite a few Progressive rock fans look down on Canterbury bands, but I really do feel that they were easily some of the most important rock groups of the '60s/'70s and were just as great as any of their peers in the genre...so for those who love Canterbury, let it out!!! (And vote for your favorite)

This is one sub-genre that I haven't explored as fully as I have wanted to over the years... Probably because the one band I did buy a lot of albums by (Soft Machine) never blew me away... They were just a bit too non-rock for my tastes... I have liked all I have heard from Gong and that is one band I really need to get into my collection...

Yeah, Gong was fabulous during their "first phase", Camembert Electrique and The "Radio Gnome Invisible" trilogy are very highly recommended.

I never got into the Canterbury scene very much. Hatfield and the North is probably my favorite out of the list though. And RIO, like Henry Cow never appealed to me at all. To me there is a fine line between experimenting and using art as an excuse to make nonsense. Maybe the whole RIO movement is too intellectual for me or something.

I am not really very aware of the Canterbury scene. I've heard a track or two from Soft Machine over the years. There's so much music out there, that once in a while I miss out on a whole sub-genre. I guess that 's what happened here...

I cannot vote. The Canterbury Scene is my favorite Progressive Rock sub-genre. Many great musicans emerged from that fantastic scene!

Thanks for hurting my brain.
I've been listening to Gong all weekend and that first Hatfield and the North l.p. is a BIG favorite.

HAD to go for Soft Machine though. Those first 3 l.p.s are just dynamite.
