Avant-Garde changed my life!

...or what I meant to say was:

Artists who have broken away from work that they were previously associated with to work on more abstract pursuits... A really basic example would be Mike Patton (although he was doing Mr.Bungle before FNM and even FNM did some crazy stuff...)

There's much better examples of this out there.

So tell me.

you may want to check out Swans. http://www.swans.pair.com/

their early period is more brutal and industrial sounding.

then, they switched the style to more rock/folk kinda style, but no less brutal and depressing. and

then, they switched again to epic scale long intrumental/experimental stuff.

Ween is an experimental band that you may like. My favorite by them is Pure Guava. Also, Chocolate and Cheese is highly acclaimed, and easier to stomach at first.

And you may like some of the early Butthole Surfers stuff. My favorite by them is Locust Abortion Technician. Another good one is Psychic ... Powerless ... Another Man's Sac.

Sonic Youth has had some very experimental albums too. Their earliest stuff, like Confusion Is Sex and Bad Moon Rising, is very far out there compared to albums like Dirty.

Public Image Ltd. is also quite experimental, at least that's how I see them. I've been listening to their first album, Public Image/First Issue, a lot recently. Second Issue/Metal Box is also very good. (They're considered post-punk.)

I'd say Skinny Puppy too, but you're coming from a rock perspective so I don't think you'd like them.

Perfect example: Julie Tippets. Her early work in no way predicted what she would later accomplish w/ "Shadow Puppeteer"

Also, Talk Talk -- extreme shift in musical direction. Synth pop turned experimental post rock pioneers...

When Al Jardine quit the Beach Boys to go to dental school. Unfortunately, he returned.

Thumbs up

Kraftwerk: started off with acoustic instruments, making almost concrète-like music. Turned into the seminal electro/dance/robotic band!

Sonic Youth did a beautiful album of drone music cultivated from ultra-loud guitar feedback which they turned into a less frantic version of Metal Machine Music. They called it Silver Session (For Jason Knuth). My favourite of their ample back catalogue.
