I think they were a fantastic band and I miss them a lot. Too bad about Corgan being such a pain. Obviously alone he's not as great as he thinks he is.

i think the material that they did probably reached the pinnacle of their creativity, and i dont think it could have got any better than songs like 1979, disarm, porcelina.... the list goes on!!
so... i voted 'get over it', as i dont think they could have progressed to anything better. i wish i could have seen em live though.

The Pumpkins were a great band in the beginning, but they faded at the end. Gish is my favorite Pumpkins album. I heard it for the first time back in '91, shortly after it came out, and it really grabbed me. No other Pumpkins album has been able to do the same.
Siamese Dream is a great album too. I think it's their second best. Melon Collie has some amazing songs on it, but some of it is just, I dunno... Adore is pleasant, but kind of boring. And then there's MACHINA/The Machines of God. Ho-hum. Was anybody paying attention by this point?
So I'm voting for the "Quit whining" option. They were on a downward trend, so it's good that they broke up.
twirler23: I saw them live a couple of times and they were outstanding. The first time I saw them was in a small club. It was the first stop on the Siamese Dream tour. Great, great show. The second time was at an outdoor festival, still part of the Siamese Dream tour.

i was dissapointed that i wasn't able to see them live before they broke up... ESPECIALLY since they finally played the east coast of canada on a summer festival tour during their last months together... (unfortunately i was stuck on an island off the coast of washington state for that summer grr...)
but yeah... bands break up all the time... or should before they become a parody of themselves... get over it...
i quite enjoyed the first few albums up to mellon collie and the infinite sadness... adore was ok...
there are probably more words in this statement than the amount of times i listened to machina in its entirety...

i like the pumpkins as much as anyone else.
but it was evolution. survival of the fittest, and towards the end there were WAY too many issues within the band that would've kept them making music like they used to. i mean the only example i really need is machina, right? get over it i say.
p.s. siamese dream is a scream.
p.p.s. i wish i was on such a close personal level with corgan or the rest of the band to be able to call him an dick, etc. man you guys are lucky.

well, if you ever read or heard any lengthy interviews with him it wouldntve been hard to surmise.
for the record, although Machina and Machina II were definitely theyre poorest offerings, had Smashing Pumpkins been able to stickit out idont doubt they wouldve continued to create more great material. Adore was an amazing album, very unique in their catalogue, and there were some brilliant moments on the Machina albums.
Look ata band like The Police- they went the second half of their careers practically hating each other but ended putting out some great records along the way [save Ghost In The Machine- and even it had a few moments]. no doubt that had they been able to somehow carry on id be listening to a lot more of Sting than ido today.

Siamese Dream is a great album, Mellon Collie has some wonderful songs, but they had better kept it as a single album... Heard Adore, didn't seem so good, I bought Machina on account of the first single, "The Everlasting Gaze",, but the rest of the album is just plain boring... And Zwan is even worse, imho... His voice gets easily on my nerves anyway...
