this will probably spark some debate... i also don't consider myself any more racist than the north american society i live in...

the best reason i've read explaining eminem's success compared him to elvis... in that they both are from the social majority(white) yet performed a musical style from the social minority (black)... r&b (as in the real rythym and blues) with elvis rap with eminem...

as with both the musical style was already gaining popularity with the youth of the social majority... there quite a few young people in the 50s who enjoyed old r&b and were open to hearing elvis's style... and who hasn't encountered a ghetto tough posse of suburban white kids waiting for their soccer mom at the mall?

both were also talented but at the same time the constant media frenzy in regards to their music and actions is what propells them into superstardom... everyone hears about them... everyone wants to know what the fuss is about... in the 50s there were a lot more open racial issues within society... a lot of parents didn't want their children listening to 'black' music (nevermind that it was usually WAY better)... and today parents are still freaking out in regards to the lifestyles portrayed within most rap music...

and who's laughing all the way to the bank? i don't think it would be the media/record comapny.... it couldn't be... one of their stars was constantly being blasted on tv... getting called everyname on the book... being placed on the tip of everyone's tongue... public demonstrations get air time and well there has to be an audio clip so that people know what is being demonstrated against... and there's no way a teen wanting to rebel against their parents and the system would read into that and want something that would cause them that much grief... no sirree... that kind of press action costs a whole lot...

so i guess to me eminem is the new elvis... doesn't mean i like either's music though...

A lot of rap songs are stupid when you just read the lyrics to them. Quality is better than speed.

I agree, it is like heavy metal, faster doesn't mean better. and substance is always better than just empty words that don't mean shit.

you should check out this guy CEX live, he is way more entertaining than 100 Eminem all together.

and of course, if eminem is butt ugly, you think people will buy his stupid ignorant lyrics with mediocre music? dont' think so.

Del tha funkee homosapien! He's f**kn great!

Eminem on the other hand is one of the biggest tossers I've ever listend to! Some people say his lyrics push the boundaries, I just say his lyrics are tasteless. That guy is so far up himself!

Also someone said is he the fastest rapper? No way! You guys should listen to the song "Chemical Calisthenics" by "Blackalicious". That song will blow you away if you think Eminem is the fastest rapper!

If you want more faster rapping than eminem, try Busta Rhymes songs:

- Gimme Some More
- Iz they wildin us & getting rowdy wit us

I can't listen to a lot of rap without going stark Raving MAD, but I'll listen to Eminem from time to time.

Speed doesn't equal quality, true. Speed only calls for a bucket of cold water and some Ritalin.

Interesting comparison of Eminem to Elvis, Panbient! It rings a lot of truth.

focalize? whatever... but like most other people have mentionned speed does not equal greatness... i'd rather hear someone say something worth listening to while making their voice flow to the beat as opposed to someone spouting off about how great they are and how much crap they gone through as fast as they can... it's like dimebag darrell from pantera said 'anyone can play really fast... it takes skill to slow down and groove together'

to me speed in rapping is very often used as a veil to hide the fact that the rapper can't think of anything valid to say... it sounds cool on the first few listens but then it wears thin...
