Monster

I'd have to agree with the idea that "Up" starts out disappointing, but grows on the listener.

But nonetheless, I voted for "Monster" because it's so out there. I just love how the really cruddy distortion and messing around with delay makes it such a challenging listen. It seems that as the album progresses, it becomes less accessible. "What's the Frequency Kenneth?" is somewhat poppy and "Strange Currencies" is a boppy 6/8 venture, but they remain twisted by the album's underlying wretchedness. Plus, I'm sure that the last track "You" must seem like a Doors-ripoff, but that somehow adds to it all. The whole album serves as a refreshing contradiction to R.E.M.'s inborn accessibibility, but leaves all the depth they've carried with them their whole career intact.

Any R.E.M. by definition is great. I especially like pre-Out Of Time albums like Fables and Life's Rich Pageant. Although, I think New Adventures In Hi-Fi is pretty amazing. Of coarse, one of their finest songs is Perfect Circle from Murmur, I love the obscurity of those lyrics: Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room. I'll have to put their early stuff back in rotation, still very fresh! I sure which Bill Berry would choose to rejoin them for the next project. I pulled those old CDs out of the closet and discovered old Replacements and Connells CDs as well so that's a bonus.

With the release of Accelerate this past week (although I'd be surprised if many members were interested) this seems like an appropriate bump.

Personally after reading a couple reviews, which seem decent, I'm more interested in exploring "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" as it sounds like a good album for me (other R.E.M. albums definitely had their moments but never really hit me like the classic band they are regarded as).

Anyone got any thoughts on Accelerate/New Adventures in Hi-Fi?
