Top 10 Composers Of The 20th Century
I'm going to give this a shot, but be warned that my knowledge of 20th century classical music is pretty limited. I'm actually really looking forward to reading some of the responses, so I can pick up some composers to get into.
For those more knowledgeable of classical music than I, please let me know what you think of my naive list!
Béla Bartók
Aaron Copland
John Cage
Phillip Glass
Iannis Xenakis
György Ligeti
Pierre Schaeffer
Karlheinz Stockhausen
Igor Stravinsky
George Gershwin

It's a strong list, Seba. Anybody who has an informed appreciation of Bartok, Cage, and Stockhausen is far from naive!
A list of 10 is a little challenging for me to come up with. I'm going to include at the top of the list one composer who rode the crest of two centuries, but certainly did some of his most important work in the early 20th:
Gustav Mahler
Aaron Copeland
Jean Sibelius
Igor Stravinski
Dimitri Shostakovich
Leonard Bernstein
Ralph Vaughn Williams
Ottorino Resphigi
Maurice Ravel
Bela Bartok
George Gershwin and Alan Hovenhess get "honorable mentions"...just under the big 10.

check out the releases on Rune Grammofon, first "Electric" and then "Dodeka", not a traditional composer of course, but something you should at least try.
