I've heard alot of Sonic Youth via filesharing, and I really like it. I'm not sure what album to get first, though. Any help?

Listened to Tom Waits latest and resisted the impulse to turn it into a frisbee and toss it HARD out of my car window.

I just bought:
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
...so I guess that's what avant-garde I'm listening to a now. I suppose that I'll slowly collect their albums throughout my life since there are so much music (from different bands) that I'd like to own. But I don't know anything about Swans.
Another album that I find a challenging but rewarding listen and that is somewhat avant garde is:
R.E.M. - Monster
