I love
Joe Maneri's recordings, but the son bores me when his is playing an electric violin. I prefer him on acoustic. He also tends to get lost at times.
I personally think,
Joe's tenor playing is influenced by
Ben Webster. A lot of people would laugh at that comment.
Joe has a bizarre career, to say the least. Outside of one recording from 1963, his career really didn't start until he was in his mid 60's. He was busy teaching his
Microtonal theories, at the
New England Conservatory of Music.
The Quartet with his son won't be performing anymore. If
Joe is still performing, I would suggest doing so while you still can. He isn't in good health, and his weight isn't helping matters. He has taken to playing live, while hooked up to an oxygen tank.
I can't recommend enough his
hat hut recordings, especially since they are
limited edition releases,
of only 3000.
The most essential recordings would be:
Dahabenzapple - (hat hut) out of print. If you find one, get it!
YO!
Coming Down the Mountain (hat hut)
Tenderly (hat hut)
