Well this whole debate springs from the fact that the word "pop-punk" has signficance as an insult. They were pop-punk but to classify them as that is considered a bad thing, by alot of people. I tried to say the same thing about New Metal, but i got shouted down!

alot of people meaning people who are so young that they can't remember a time before green day or bink 182. Before those bands the term pop punk was not considered an insult, pop punk bands were those punk band who followed more of a pop formula to their song writting, more melody, more verse chorus verse, less agression, less serious lyrics, but in many cases still good music.

I think NU metal is different, it is a new style of music, the stuff that is being made today is NU metal, the stuff that is labled pop punk these days is only pop music with a manufactued punk image to make money from kids and teens who really don't have a clue about punk rock.
