The Good Rev is correct it's called Post-Romantic.

The order of the periods are

Medieval
Renaissance
Baroque
Classical
Romantic
Post-Romantic
Modern
Contemporary

It's only called Impressionism in France. Since it started around the same time, as the more commonly know Impressionism period in art. Everywhere else it's known as Post-Romantic. Debussy was the first in France.

Not at all! I merely meant to say that for the majority of modern works I appreciate it on an intellectual level more than anything else...more often than not the sound of modern period music is less immediately enjoyable than Romanic ...but my feelings on this could change at any time, lol. Keep in mind that I did say that I couldn't decided between the two as a favorite, so I'm not trying to devalue either...

I was only trying to clarify. Since it could have been taken either way.

Sure he is correct; so was I (kind of, according to some sources anyway). I was just naming it differently, being more familiar with the term Impressionism, which is not only used in France, but also over here (Netherlands).

There is no "The order of periods" imo. Dates vary and so do the names. You can divide the periods very roughly (as in this case) or go into great detail. Neither of both will satisfy everybody.

There isn't anything that ever satisfies everybody. But the majority will go with the order I listed.

The main reason is of course that "God himself" (i.e. Bach) worked during this era.

you're completly right! i also love the baroque period, i think of it as that time where all basis for music tecnique were *invented* (hence the title "GOD" given to Bach! )

nevertheless, i voted romantic, just because most of the composers that i *love* fall in that period... But most certainly, Bach and Haydn (& Händel, and many more ... Scarlatti!...) have a special place in my musical heart

has to be romantic for me. no other period has music that can inspire and move me like music from that time. it just has such a vast sound, with such beautiful developments in melodies and harmonies.

ha, this feels like a review of my music appreciation class i took last semester..
well, we studied the four major periods (baroque, classical, romantic, and modern)... i like modern the most because i like the experimentation that some of the composers tried.. i cannot think of names offhand, but i really liked what they did...
oh yea, and the gregorian chant.. isn't that like a german religious hymn or something?
