Spock's Beard?

Well I found a couple of reviews from them on some metal sites, and they were all praising them. I checked out a good number of their songs and I found that they were neither metal, or good.

Anyone heard anything about this newer prog-rock band? Maybe I just heard the wrong songs. The songs I heard sounded like they were heavily inspired by King Crimson and maybe The Beatles, but it wasn't very good.

They've been around for a while on the Neo-Prog circuit and they're not that bad -- that said, they're not that good.

They're an enjoyable listen but I wouldn't consider them unique or original by any means (that said, I don't think they care to be...they know they're a revivalist group); however, I am rather fond of the song "At The End Of The Day", but that's just me...

...and how did they come up on metal sites? They're about as far as you get from "metal"...

Yeah I know that's what I was wondering

http://www.metalreviews.com/reviews/detail.php3?id=1162

Although I just noticed they labeled them as progressive rock not metal, but considering I've never read a review on that site that wasn't metal it got my attention.

But anyways thanks for the reccomendation

Hey, this sucks.. They are very high on my want list as I have heard they were really good... Now I may have to bump them down... Any other opinions about them from others here at radiomute???...

It doesn't bother me how unique or original they are, I just want to know if they sound good (as 99.9% of all neo-prog and neo-psych are not original,, that's why their labled as neo)...

I may have bumped them up on my list over the last few years because their name is so cool... I assume it's from the Star Trek episode where Spock has that cool beard in the alternate universe (yeah, I'm a BIG Star Trek geek)...

Anyway, I would like to hear what others have to say about them...

Actually, you'd probably like them Syd -- they're very melodic and have well written songs...when I say "they're not that good" is to say that they don't really offer anything new; but technically, they're a fine band and Neal Morse is as talented a singer/songwriter as any...as far as their sound is concerned, they're best described as a Genesis for the alternative rock generation...

...but ultimately, I wouldn't tell you not to look into them, just don't expect genius.

I can only suggest the album "V" as that's all I own, but it's an enjoyable listen.

And as a side note, I used to be a pretty big fan of Star Trek myself...have drifted in recent years, but I still enjoy the reruns of the first three series...

Actually, as far as neo-prog groups are concerned, I'd steer you towards Porcupine Tree sooner than Spock's beard, at least they offer a unique interpretation of the style...

...I've been a fan for about 4 years and Steven Wilson is a brilliant singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer and has released some great records over the years...his earlier work was more directly related to '70s prog-rock, but w/ his later albums like Stupid Dream and In Absentia he adoped a style that fused accessible, melodic pop/rock w/ prog-rock style and it works really well...I think you'd like it, Syd, if you're not already listening.

You might also enjoy The Flower Kings...

I too have found Spock's Beard to be quite boring. Some people really like them(its like some of those doom bands which some people love very much but most don't care about at all)
The Flower Kings and Porcupine Tree are quite good though. I like the Flower Kings better.

I'd put Porcupine Tree pretty high up on your list if you haven't heard anything.

I think "Stupid Dream" would be the best place to start...
